The Last Legion is out on DVD on the 18 February

The Romans were the people from a city called Rome in Italy.

Rome was the greatest city of its time and had nearly one million people living there.

The Romans were fierce soldiers and wonderful builders.

About 1,800 years ago Rome became the capital of a very big and powerful empire.

Roman soldiers conquered large parts of Europe and North Africa and would return to Rome marching through the city to show off all the wealth they had plundered from the people they had beaten.

The Roman army was skilled at fighting and defending the borders from attack and clever civil servants governed each country!

INTRIGUING AND FUN FACTS ON THE ROMANS

Hadrian’s Wall – The Romans often protected the borders of their empires and one of the most famous things that the Romans built in the UK was the frontier between England and Scotland, called Hadrian’s Wall, named after the Emperor who ordered it built.

It was started in 120 A.D. and took nine years to build.

Roman Roads - It was important for the Roman army to be able to move soldiers across the country so they built roads as straight as possible, in order to travel as quickly as they could. The roads connected forts and important towns!

So, if you are ever travelling on a really straight and long road, with no bends, it's probably an old Roman one

Bridges - The Romans introduce the first bridges to England and they also build the first "London Bridge" which has been excavated recently, and found to be only yards from the modern London Bridge!

Caligula & his horse - The Emperor Caligula was one of the most well known emperors but not for good reasons. He was really cruel and mad so much so that he even made his horse a Senator!

Toilet Paper - The Roman army didn't have toilet paper so they used a water soaked sponge on the end of a stick instead!

Toothpaste -  Did you know how the Romans brushed their teeth? They used powdered mouse brains as toothpaste!

Soap – Romans were considered very clean people and are still famous for their baths! However, the Britons washed with soap long before the Romans did!
