Corgi Auction Hurricane models flown on-board BBMF Lancaster for Charity ‘Help for Heroes’ and raise £1500!

On Saturday 14th June 2008, two Corgi 1:32nd scale Hurricane ‘Night Reaper’ models were flown on-board the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) Lancaster as it flew over Buckingham Palace in celebration of the Queens birthday.

The flypast over the Palace involved 55 aircraft including the BBMF Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster. In total 14 different types of aircraft were used as part of the birthday celebrations including the latest front line jet, the Eurofighter Typhoon.

Working in association with the BBMF, Corgi have auctioned the two models flown on-board the Lancaster through the Corgi.co.uk website.

The two winners (Mr Paul Smith from Kettering and Mr Nicholas Brown from Berwickshire) have helped to raise a combined total of £1500 which has been donated directly to the Help for Heroes charity.

Help for Heroes provides practical direct support to those servicemen and women wounded in the line of duty in the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Supporters of this charity include Prince William and Harry, and the charity is backed by the services charity.

The Hurricane models flown on board were produced as a special for the BBMF’s 50th Anniversary in 2007. This 1:32nd scale model has an RRP of £89.99 and only 1000 pieces of AA35508 were produced worldwide. The model depicts the aircraft in markings JX-E, and includes a special ‘on-board’ certificate of authentication

from the BBMF and has a 6 page story booklet detailing the history of the plane.

The' Night Reaper ' Hurricane, was flown by the Czech fighter ace Flt Lt Karel Kuttelwascher DFC during night intruder operations from Tangmere in 1942 with the RAF's legendary No 1(F) Squadron. In only 15 night intruder missions 'Kut', as he was know to his colleagues, shot down 15 enemy bombers (3 in one night on 5th May 1942) over France; he also damaged a further five bombers and shot up several steam locomotives and 'E' boats.
